Bernard did not explain what the Song means, but he did find in it a terrific source of sermon illustrations. Augustine’s claim that one should distinguish between “use” and “enjoyment” is misleading. A Christian might wrongly make the Bible itself into his or her joy (but see Jer 15:16), but this does not validate allegorism.
