congregation, just as a modern preacher may use words and stories from current events, memorable sayings, or motion pictures to illustrate and add flourishes to his sermon. Bernard did not explain what the Song means, but he did find in it a terrific source of sermon illustrations. Augustine’s claim that one should distinguish between “use” and “enjoyment” is misleading. A Christian might wrongly make the Bible itself into his or her joy (but see Jer 15:16), but this does not validate allegorism.
